AALU’s advocacy has been effective over the years due largely to the efforts of our membership. AALU members have always been known as leaders within the insurance industry because of their experience and expertise. They are also widely regarded as leaders within their communities as they recognize the importance of getting involved and making a difference. In order for AALU to continue to be an effective advocacy organization, our members must continue to participate in the political process. It is only through that involvement that members of Congress will hear from two perspectives that they care most about: that of a constituent but also someone who is able to communicate the impact potential tax legislation will have on the marketplace, the policyholders, and the general public. Relationships between our members and legislators are always mutually beneficial. Lawmakers obviously play a vital role determining the priorities within our society and incorporating them into legislation. We have found that they are always interested and appreciative to hear from their constituents. An AALU member can be helpful to a member of Congress by aiding them in the fundraising process (see the Legislative Circle Program) or by volunteering their services during a campaign (see IMPACT). It is AALU’s goal to have a member actively involved and have a relationship with every member of Congress. It is of particular importance that we have a member who has a relationship and is involved with legislators who will have the most impact on the tax issues we care most about. The group that has the most influence over this process is the Senate and House of Representatives Leadership, the Senate Finance Committee, and the House Ways and Means Committee. If you have an existing relationship
with your Representative or Senator, or would like AALU’s help in developing
one, contact Justin Brown
at (202)772-2493.
