Both active and associate members must pay an initiation fee of $750 upon submitting an application.

The initiation fee is refunded if an application is not accepted. If you are an individual affiliated with an AALU Issues Alliance Company or Producer Group who contributes a minimum of $100,000, your initiation fee will be waived.

Active Member
An active member must be a producing agent who:

• Has over five years in the life insurance business, or three years if member is a chartered life underwriter (CLU) and a member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT)
• Specializes in one or more fields of advanced life underwriting
• Effective September 1, 2009 - August 31, 2010: averages for the last two years with a minimum of $190,000 in first year commissions with one half resulting from the sale of life insurance*
• Effective September 1, 2009 - August 31, 2010: averages for the last two years of at least $1,500,000 in agency first year commissions for agency managers and brokerage general agents, with one half resulting from the sale of life insurance
• Effective September 1, 2009 - August 31, 2010: averages for the last two years of at least $240,000 in defined net income with one half of resulting from the sale of life insurance**

Associate Member
An associate member:

• works in the home office or an insurance agency in the advanced underwriting area
• or is in a business or profession (such as an attorney, CPA, trust officer or specialist) dealing with advanced life underwriting
• or is on the staff of an AALU member
• is not eligible for active membership

Applicants for both active and associate membership are required to submit three AALU sponsor names and a commitment to become politically involved. AALU will contact the applicant’s sponsors for recommendations on their behalf.  One letter of recommendation must be from an AALU member in the geographical area of the applicant.

Retired Member:
A retired member:

• is at least 65 years of age
• has held membership in AALU for ten consecutive years
• is no longer active in the life insurance business on a full-time basis
